Neck pain is uncomfortable on its own. When it is accompanied by tingling, numbness, burning, or weakness that travels into your shoulder, arm, or hand, it may indicate that a nerve in your neck is irritated or compressed.
At Aventura Wellness & Rehab Center in Miami, we help patients determine whether these symptoms may be related to cervical radiculopathy, a disc problem, a muscle or joint condition, or another source. Identifying the cause matters because neck and arm symptoms do not all require the same treatment.
What Is Cervical Radiculopathy?
Cervical radiculopathy is commonly called a pinched nerve in the neck. It develops when a nerve root becomes compressed or irritated where it branches away from the spinal cord.
The nerves in your neck carry signals to your shoulders, arms, and hands. When one of those nerves is affected, symptoms may travel along its path rather than remaining in the neck.
You may experience:
- Neck pain that extends into the shoulder or arm
- Tingling or a “pins and needles” sensation
- Numbness in the arm, hand, or fingers
- Burning, sharp, or electric-like pain
- Weakness in the shoulder, arm, hand, or grip
- Pain that worsens when turning or extending your neck
- Reduced neck movement
Some people have significant arm symptoms with relatively little neck pain.
What Causes a Pinched Nerve in the Neck?
A cervical disc herniation is one possible cause. The discs between the neck’s vertebrae act as cushions. If part of a disc pushes outward, it may irritate a nearby nerve root.
Cervical radiculopathy may also develop because of age-related changes. As discs lose height and joints change over time, bone spurs can form and the openings through which the nerves travel may become narrower.
Other possible contributors include:
- An auto accident or whiplash injury
- A sports injury
- Repetitive lifting or overhead work
- Poor posture and prolonged screen use
- Arthritis in the cervical spine
- Previous neck injuries
At Aventura Wellness & Rehab Center, we ask when the symptoms began, where they travel, and which movements make them better or worse. These details help us understand whether a cervical nerve may be involved.
Could the Tingling Be Coming From Somewhere Else?
Not every tingling arm is caused by cervical radiculopathy. Nerves can also become compressed near the shoulder, elbow, or wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, shoulder conditions, and certain medical problems may create overlapping symptoms.
A muscle strain can cause neck and shoulder pain, but it is less likely to explain persistent numbness or weakness in the hand. That is why we do not want you to assume every case is simply a tight muscle or poor posture.
How Is Cervical Radiculopathy Evaluated?
Your evaluation may include checking your neck movement, posture, reflexes, sensation, grip, and muscle strength. We may ask you to perform specific movements to see whether they reproduce or reduce your symptoms.
Imaging is not required for every patient. However, an X-ray, MRI, or another study may be appropriate when symptoms are severe, follow a significant injury, persist despite care, or include neurological changes. If your condition requires testing or treatment outside our scope, we will refer you to the appropriate medical provider.
Can Cervical Radiculopathy Improve Without Surgery?
Many cases improve with conservative care, although recovery time varies. The goal is to reduce irritation around the nerve, restore comfortable movement, and address the condition contributing to the pressure.
Your personalized plan at Aventura Wellness & Rehab Center may include:
Chiropractic Care: Carefully selected chiropractic techniques may help improve movement in restricted areas of the neck and upper back. Treatment is adapted to your condition, comfort, and neurological findings.
Spinal Decompression: Nonsurgical spinal decompression gently stretches the cervical spine in a controlled manner. We may consider it when a bulging or herniated disc is contributing to neck pain and nerve irritation.
Physical Rehabilitation: Targeted rehabilitation may help strengthen the muscles supporting the neck and shoulders, improve posture, restore range of motion, and reduce repeated stress on the cervical spine.
Class IV Laser Therapy: Class IV laser therapy delivers light energy to targeted tissues. It may be included in a conservative plan to help manage pain and inflammation around irritated soft tissues.
Not every treatment is appropriate for every patient. Dr. Greaux and our Miami team evaluate your symptoms before recommending care.
When Do Neck and Arm Symptoms Require Urgent Care?
Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly progressing weakness, difficulty walking, loss of coordination, or numbness affecting both arms or legs. Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or severe symptoms following a major accident also require emergency evaluation.
Call 911 if arm discomfort occurs with chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, jaw pain, or other possible heart-attack symptoms.
Do not delay an evaluation if numbness or weakness is worsening, even when the pain itself is manageable.
