Why Does My Lower Back Hurt?
Back pain when caused in the lower has a wide range of causes: genetics, trauma, improper posture and age-related changes in the spine. Sprains and strains that injure ligaments and muscles usually heal on their own. The effect of ageing is another common reason and often requires medical intervention.
Spinal stenosis. This narrowing of the spinal canal compresses adjacent nerves and can result in chronic backache, numbness and cramping. It’s often the result of bone spurs caused by osteoarthritis.
Herniated disc. Also known as a bulging disc, it occurs when the soft centre of discs between spinal bones bulges through a weak spot in its casing. When it pushes against spinal nerves, it can cause severe pain, numbness and weakness.
Sciatica. This common type of pain is caused by pressure on a large nerve that runs from the lower spine down the back of each leg. Sciatica can cause pain in the lower back as well as buttock and hip pain, and weakness or numbness in the legs and feet. Many people feel it on only one side.
Spinal osteoarthritis. Also known as facet disease or lumbar arthritis, this degenerative condition causes bony growths on spinal bones that lead to pain and stiffness. It is usually a result of age and years of wear and tear.
Osteoporosis. Most often seen in older Caucasian women, this progressive condition causes brittle bones that are prone to fracturing.
